Used Jet Ski History Check: PWC HIN Lookup Guide

5 min read · Updated May 2026

To check a used jet ski's history, locate the Hull Identification Number (HIN) on the hull, then enter it at HullTrace.com. A free lookup confirms registration records. A full report ($15) adds lien checks, USCG accident data, stolen vessel status, and recall information. The whole process takes about five minutes and is the only way to know what you are actually buying.

“Personal watercraft are among the most frequently damaged and quickly resold used vehicles on the market. A history check is not optional.”

Jet skis, Sea-Doos, and WaveRunners are high-wear machines. They are often run hard, repaired cheaply, and resold privately — bypassing dealership inspections that would flag underlying damage. A history check surfaces what a test ride and visual inspection cannot: prior liens, insurance total-loss events, USCG-reported accidents, and active stolen reports.

How to run a used jet ski history check

01

Find the HIN on the PWC

Every personal watercraft built after November 1, 1972 carries a 12-character Hull Identification Number under 33 CFR Part 181. On most jet skis, the primary HIN is stamped on the starboard (right) side of the hull near the stern, often close to the pump intake or boarding platform mounting points. On Sea-Doo models it is near the pump nozzle area; on Yamaha WaveRunners it is on the stern just above the waterline. If the seller cannot locate the HIN, or if it appears scratched out, painted over, or replaced, treat that as a serious red flag.

02

Run a free HIN lookup

Enter the 12-character HIN at HullTrace.com. The free lookup confirms the HIN is valid, returns basic title and registration records, and flags immediate issues: registration gaps, no paper trail, or a HIN that does not match any known manufacturer. This takes under a minute and costs nothing. If the free result looks normal, proceed to a full report before committing to a purchase.

03

Pull a full PWC history report

A full report ($15) checks the HIN against state DMV databases across all 50 states, the USCG documented vessel database, the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) stolen vessel registry, USCG accident investigation records (PSIX), and open safety recalls. For a personal watercraft sold privately, this is the only way to verify whether there is an outstanding loan on the craft or whether it was ever in a recorded accident.

04

Check for outstanding liens

Personal watercraft are frequently financed, and a lien filed against the hull follows the craft through ownership changes. Under 46 USC 31342, a preferred ship mortgage recorded with the USCG is enforceable against subsequent purchasers regardless of what the seller tells you. A lien from a state lender may be recorded at the state DMV instead. Either way, if you purchase a craft with an undisclosed lien, the lender retains the right to repossess it. The full HullTrace report searches both federal and state sources for recorded encumbrances.

05

Verify the title matches the hull

Compare the HIN printed on the title document to the HIN stamped on the hull character by character. A single digit off is a mismatch: stop the transaction. Also confirm that the seller's name on the title matches their government-issued ID. Check the title for any branded language: "salvage," "rebuilt," "water damaged," or "total loss." Some states use different terminology, so look for any unusual notations.

PWC-specific risks that a history check catches

Personal watercraft have some unique risk factors compared to larger boats. Here is what to watch for:

Supercharger damageTurbocharged and supercharged PWC (Yamaha FX series, Sea-Doo RXP-X) are expensive to rebuild. An engine failure often leads to insurance claims that appear in USCG or insurer databases.
Flood or submersionA capsized or submerged PWC can sustain total electrical and engine damage that is nearly invisible after cosmetic cleanup. Submersion events are often reported as accidents under 33 CFR Part 173.
Collision historyPWC collisions with docks, other vessels, or swimmers trigger USCG accident reports under the Boating Accident Report Database (BARD). These appear in the full history report.
Outstanding safety recallsThe USCG maintains a recall database for recreational vessels. Open recalls on steering, fuel systems, or hull integrity can affect safety and resale value. A history check flags any open recalls by HIN.
Title washingA PWC totaled in Florida may be re-titled in Georgia without a salvage brand. A full history check cross-references all 50 state DMV records to catch salvage history that traveled across state lines.

Where to find the HIN on major PWC brands

All personal watercraft manufactured in or imported to the US after November 1, 1972 carry a HIN under 33 CFR Part 181. The primary HIN must be on the starboard side of the transom or hull stern area, within two inches of the top. Here is where the three major brands typically place theirs:

  • Sea-Doo (BRP): Stamped on the rear starboard hull near the pump nozzle or boarding step area. Look for raised characters molded directly into the hull or a metal plate.
  • Yamaha WaveRunner: Located on the starboard stern, typically just above the waterline. Usually stamped directly into the hull material.
  • Kawasaki Jet Ski: Found on the starboard side of the stern hull, below the hull lip. May require tilting the craft slightly to read clearly.

Boats built after August 1, 1984 are also required under 33 CFR 181.29 to carry a secondary hidden HIN in an unexposed interior location. On PWC this is less commonly enforced for smaller hulls, but if a second HIN exists, verify it matches the primary. See our guide on what a HIN is and how to read it for a full breakdown of the 12-character format.

What a full PWC history report includes

The $15 HullTrace report pulls from multiple government databases that are not publicly searchable:

  • State DMV records (all 50 states): Title history, ownership transfers, registration gaps, and any state-issued brands (salvage, rebuilt, flood, total loss).
  • USCG documented vessel database: Federal documentation status and any preferred ship mortgages (federal liens) recorded against the hull.
  • NCIC stolen vessel registry: Active theft reports from law enforcement agencies across all 50 states and US territories.
  • USCG BARD / PSIX accident data: Boating accident reports filed with the USCG under 33 CFR Part 173, including collisions, capsizings, fires, and personal injury incidents tied to the HIN.
  • USCG recall database: Open manufacturer safety recalls and USCG-issued defect notifications affecting the hull or its components.
FREE VS. PAID LOOKUP

The free HIN lookup at HullTrace confirms the HIN is valid and returns basic registration data. The $15 full report adds lien checks, USCG accident records, stolen vessel status, and recall data. For any PWC over $2,000, the report cost is trivial compared to the risk of an undisclosed lien or salvage history.

Frequently asked questions

Do jet skis have a HIN like boats?

Yes. Every personal watercraft manufactured or imported in the US after November 1, 1972 is required under 33 CFR Part 181 to carry a Hull Identification Number. On jet skis, the HIN is typically stamped on the rear starboard side of the hull, near the pump intake or transom area.

How do I run a jet ski history check?

Locate the 12-character HIN on the hull, then enter it at HullTrace.com. A free lookup shows basic registration data. A full report ($15) adds lien checks, USCG accident records, stolen vessel status from the NCIC database, and any open safety recalls.

What do jet ski history checks show that the title doesn't?

A title only documents ownership transfers. A history report also surfaces outstanding liens (which survive sale and let a lender repossess the craft), USCG-reported accidents, whether the craft was ever declared a total loss, and active stolen reports. Many of these don't appear on the title at all.

Can a jet ski have a salvage title?

Yes. When an insurer declares a PWC a total loss after a collision, fire, or flood, most states brand the title as salvage. However, salvage branding rules for watercraft vary by state, and some states apply brands inconsistently. A HullTrace history report checks across all 50 state DMV databases to catch brands that may have been laundered through a re-title in a lenient state.

Where is the HIN on a Sea-Doo or Yamaha WaveRunner?

On Sea-Doo models, the HIN is typically on the rear starboard hull near the pump nozzle. On Yamaha WaveRunners, it is stamped on the starboard side of the stern, just above the waterline. On Kawasaki Jet Ski models, check the starboard transom area just below the hull lip. All follow the 33 CFR 181 requirement to place the primary HIN on the starboard transom within two inches of the top.
