A HIN is a 12-character code that encodes the manufacturer, serial number, and model year of every boat built after 1972.
What is a HIN?
Every boat manufactured in the US after November 1, 1972 is required to have a Hull Identification Number. It is permanently affixed to the starboard side of the transom.
How to read a HIN
- 1–3Manufacturer ID (MIC) assigned by USCG
- 4–8Manufacturer serial number
- 9Production month (A=Jan ... L=Dec)
- 10Last digit of production year
- 11–12Model year (two-digit)
