Terms of Service

Effective: January 1, 2025 · Last updated: May 2026

Acceptance

By accessing hulltrace.com or purchasing a report, you agree to these Terms of Service (“Terms”). If you do not agree, do not use the service. These Terms form a binding agreement between you and HullTrace (“we,” “our,” “us”).

What we provide

HullTrace aggregates vessel registration and history data from publicly available government sources — including the US Coast Guard National Vessel Documentation Center, state registration databases, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the National Crime Information Center — and presents it in a structured report format. We offer two service tiers:

  • Free lookup: Registration status, make, model, year, and record counts.
  • Full report ($15): Title chain, lien check, accident history, salvage and insurance loss records, and open recalls. Delivered as a one-time purchase. Includes a shareable permalink.

Data accuracy disclaimer

This is the most important section. Please read it carefully.

HullTrace data is sourced from third-party government databases that may be incomplete, outdated, or contain errors. We make no warranty — express or implied — as to the accuracy, completeness, or fitness for purpose of any information in a report. Specifically:

  • Accident and incident records depend on reporting by law enforcement and coast guard personnel. Not all incidents are reported.
  • Lien records may not reflect liens filed in all jurisdictions or recently released liens.
  • Salvage and insurance loss records are sourced from Copart and insurance auction platforms. Coverage is limited to lots listed on these platforms and may not include all salvage events.
  • Recall data covers CPSC-notified recalls and may not include all manufacturer or dealer recalls.

A HullTrace report is not a substitute for a professional marine survey, title search, or legal due diligence. We strongly recommend obtaining a survey from a certified marine surveyor before any vessel purchase.

Payments and refunds

Reports are priced at $15 USD per vessel (one-time). Payment is processed by Stripe. Your card is charged at the time of purchase.

Because report delivery is immediate and the underlying data is consumed upon generation, all sales are final. We do not issue refunds except in the following circumstances:

  • The report failed to generate due to a technical error on our end.
  • You were charged twice for the same HIN within 24 hours.

To request a refund under these conditions, email support@hulltrace.com within 7 days of purchase with your order confirmation.

Permitted use

Reports are licensed for personal, non-commercial use only — specifically, evaluating a vessel you are considering purchasing or already own. You may not:

  • Resell or redistribute report data to third parties.
  • Use HullTrace for bulk data collection, scraping, or building a competing service.
  • Use automated tools (bots, scripts) to query the service without written permission.
  • Use reports for employment screening, credit decisions, or any purpose regulated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). HullTrace is not a consumer reporting agency.

Intellectual property

The HullTrace name, logo, design, and software are our property. The underlying vessel data originates from government sources and is not proprietary. The compilation, structure, and presentation of that data in report form is our work product and may not be reproduced without permission.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, HullTrace's total liability for any claim arising from use of the service is limited to the amount you paid for the report giving rise to the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages, including any loss arising from a vessel purchase decision made in reliance on our reports.

Disclaimer of warranties

The service is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranty of any kind. We disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Delaware.

Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms at any time. Continued use of the service after an update constitutes acceptance. We will note material changes with a new effective date at the top of this page.
